Pyritized Ammonite # BPhylloceras sp.
Jurassic Period
Nezala - Boulemane, Mid-Atlas Mts

Phylloceras is an extinct genus of ammonoid cephalopods belonging to the family Phylloceratidae.
These nektonic (free swimming) carnivores lived from Early Jurassic to Late Cretaceous. Wikipedia
A very high quality split pair of a relatively rare pyrite ammonite.
The surface of each half has been polished to highlight the pattern of this cephalopod's growth chambers.
So, the result is a very nice effect: a shiny metallic outline of the coiled chambers.
See pics. (although all my photos don't quite due justice to the pyrite's luster.)
Perhaps, my first photo attempt will give you a better idea of the pyrite's luster.
This ammonite fossils measures approximately 1-1/4" across.
Total weight of both halves: about 18.4 grams.
Photos taken outdoors
