This is a very colorful ammonite fossil. It is a fabulous specimen of Discoscaphites conradi from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has faint ribbing and a somewhat rounded keel. There are several rows of prominent nodes on the shoulders and near the keel of the ammonite. These features are very clearly defined on this specimen. But the most striking feature of this ammonite is its amazing natural color. The iridescent nacre of this ammonite is very easily seen. It flashes a full rainbow of colors and is almost opalescent in nature (first photo taken in direct sunlight, second photo taken with indoor lighting). The distinct specimen is wonderfully perched on a natural block of dense, concretionary matrix. This is a very displayable ammonite from the Black Hills of South Dakota.
A Certificate of Authenticity from EXTINCTIONS.com is included with this specimen.
