This is a very special fossil. This is Neochetoceras steraspis from the world-famous Solnhofen Limestone of Germany. This classic specimen was acquired from an old German collection YEARS AGO - it still has the original collection label on the back of the plate! The Solnhofen Limestone is known worldwide for the exquisite preservation of its fossils. This distinct specimen is very unusual in that the phosphatic aptychus, or operculum, of the cephalopod is beautifully preserved in life position. A killer ammonite from this location is unusual enough, but to have the aptychus preserved on the ammonite is extremely rare. This wonderfully detailed cephalopod is beautifully showcased on the large plate of lithographic limestone. This is a very collectible fossil ammonite, acquired from a historic European collection.
A Certificate of Authenticity from EXTINCTIONS.com is included with this specimen.
