The name "ammonite", from which the scientific term is derived, was inspired by the spiral shape of their fossilized shells, which somewhat resemble tightly coiled

' horns.

horns of Ammon
") because the Egyptian god Ammon (
Amun
) was typically depicted wearing rams' horns.
