3.9" Black Ammonite split polished pair with Calcite crystal filled chambers.  Fantastic color to this fossil pair with calcified hollow chambers.  The black color is unusual and a rarer find for these Ammonites.  The sides of the pair measure 13mm and 11mm at their widest points.  Ammonites are an extinct group of marine animals related to the modern day squid.  The last of its surviving lines disappeared with the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, though these Cleoniceras Ammonites stem from the Early Cretaceous at around 110 million years.  As it grew, it added newer and larger chambers to the open end of the spiral.  Only the last and largest chamber was occupied by the living animal at any given moment.  A top notch fossil specimen pair for display and study from Madagascar.
